Hey Beauty Lovers!
It's been a while since I posted in my Skincare Chat Series. This is actually one of my favorites since I get to write about popular topics in the skincare community.
You may not have heard about the Korean 7-Skin Method yet, or maybe you are just confused with the technique. Either way, I'm glad you found my blog! In this post, I will be breaking down the history of the 7-Skin Method in the US, the original technique, and some product recommendations. If this sounds like what you are looking for, you have come to the right place!
US History of the 7-Skin Method:
As usual, Glow Recipe is behind bringing the latest K-Beauty trends to the US. Co-Founder Sarah Lee introduced the 7-Skin Method a few years ago, and it was an instant hit! Since it was brought to the States, there have been so many interpretations of the technique popping up all over the internet.
I'm not saying that there is a wrong way to apply seven layers of toner, but there is the original way. The way that will work for every skin type, and the way that will work the best.
Forget everything you know about the 7-Skin Method, unless you already watched the Glow Recipe tutorials, and get ready to change your skin drastically!
The 7-Skin Method:
The term Skin in Korean skincare is also another way of saying toner. So the 7-Skin Method is actually just applying seven layers of toner to your face and neck. It sounds pretty simple, but there are a few rules to this technique.
The most important rule to remember is to use a hydrating toner without alcohol. Think about it this way, if you are going to be adding multiple layers of toner to your skin, you definitely don't want to apply a drying ingredient like alcohol. I have a list of some amazing hydrating toners down below, so don't panic!
Once you choose an appropriate toner, all you need to do is apply seven layers of toner to freshly cleansed skin with your hands or a cotton round. The layers are applied consecutively, and there is no wait time between each layer. If you are new to hydrating toners, you may want to start with three or five layers and see how your skin reacts to the intense hydration. The 7-Skin Method can be incorporated into your AM and/or PM routine, but I would recommend starting with using this technique once a day.
Sarah Lee suggests applying the first later of toner to slightly damp skin. This can be done by leaving your skin damp after cleansing, or using a type of beauty water to dampen the skin before toning. Personally, I like to either use rose water, Beauty Water, or an exfoliating toner before diving into the 7-Skin Method.
Finally, you don't need to use seven layers of the same toner. You can totally mix hydrating toners and add a few layers of each one. This is actually my preferred way to use the seven skin technique, as it provides my skin with more ingredient variety.
Who Should Use The 7-Skin Method:
The best part of this skin hydrating technique is that it can be used on all skin types! Yes, you read that correctly. The 7-Skin Method is fantastic for every skin type from dry to oily skin, even sensitive skin.
If you have dry skin, you will love this technique. Your skin will go from the Sahara Desert to completely hydrated in a matter of days. I highly recommend following up with serum and moisturizer for a flake-free complexion.
If you have oily or combination skin, I definitely recommend starting with three layers of toner. If the three layers provide sufficient hydration, there is no need to add any more toner. Three might be the magic number for you. If you feel like you need more layers, you can try increasing to five layers before finally trying the full seven layers. Additionally, you may find that you don't need to follow up with moisturizer in the summer months. Listen to your skin, and don't over hydrate!
For sensitive skin types, I highly recommend sticking to hydrating toners with minimal ingredients lists. Centella Asiatica is a fantastic ingredient to look for in a toner for sensitive skin. I have a recommendation for a sensitive skin toner down below.
Does The 7-Skin Method Actually Work:
It might sound crazy to apply seven layers of toner to your skin daily, but let me tell you, it will change your skin and possibly your life. Okay, that might have been a little dramatic, but if you are suffering from dehydrated skin, you will understand what I mean after a few days.
The beauty of the 7-Skin Method is that it cures skin dehydration. Most people with dry or acne-prone skin try to fix the problem with thick creams or harsh acne treatments. This usually makes the skin condition worse and can be frustrating, to say the least. The real issue that usually needs to be addressed is dehydration.
Applying multiple layers of hydrating toner allows the ingredients to penetrate deeply and fully. The result, lightweight intense hydration that will make your skin glow. With that being said, I do think that taking the time to incorporate this technique into your daily routine is worth the effort.
