Hey Beauty Lovers!
As I mentioned in my last post, one of my favorite kbeauty concepts is hydration in layers. I always thought that applying moisturizer would keep my skin hydrated and smooth. I genuinely thought it was strange that no matter how much moisturizer I applied, my skin would flake and feel uncomfortably tight. I tried moisturizers that were designed for extremely dry skin, but my skin just felt flaky and itchy. What I didn't know at the time was that the other products in my skincare routine were stripping the moisture right out of my skin, essentially damaging my skins natural moisture barrier. If you are struggling with dry skin, dry patches, or you just want to take better care of your skin, continue reading!
The secret to very soft skin is hydration in layers. This means that you should be first cleansing with an oil cleanser, selecting hydrating toners, adding an essence, applying hydrating serums, using a moisturizer, and sealing everything in with a beauty oil. This may seem overwhelming at first, so let's break it down:
With proper hydration, your skin can be soft, smooth, and clear. Yes it's true, that even people with oily skin need to moisturize. For oily skin, you will want to pick lighter moisturizers than those with dryer skin. You will always need a moisturizer because oily skin will get more oily if it is dehydrated. This increased oil production can result in acne and redness, which no one wants. Don't let your skin suffer any longer! Start hydrating your skin properly today!

- Oil Cleanser- this is one of my favorite kbeauty steps. An oil cleanser will help remove all your makeup and SPF while hydrating your skin at the same time. This is just a first cleanse, so make sure you follow up with a normal cleanser after. My favorite oil cleanser can be found here.
- Hydrating Toners- look for toners that contain botanicals and very little or no alcohol. This step will add enough moisture to your skin after cleansing and prevent it from starting to dry out. My favorite hydrating toner is shown below and can be found here. You can also layer your your toners, and use facial mists during this step. Just give each layer a few minutes to sink into the skin. My favorite facial mist is shown below and can be found here.
- Essence- an essence will really give you the most drastic results. These products prep your skin for the rest of your skincare routine, and can really soften the skin. Look for products that contain fermented complexes or snail extracts. My favorite essence is shown below, and can be found here.
- Serums- these can be pretty expensive, but they don't have to be! I always look for a serum that has hyaluronic acid to retain moisture, but most serums on the market are pretty hydrating. If you are using hyaluronic acid, make sure to follow up with an actual moisturizer. Hyaluronic acid can only retain the moisture you give it! My favorite inexpensive serum can be found here.
- Moisturizer- select a moisturizer appropriate for the time of day and your skin type. This is very important. If you have combination skin like me, you might want to choose a lighter moisturizer for the AM and a heavier cream in the PM. I will talk about selecting the right moisturizer in a future post so stay tuned!
- Beauty Oil- this is my favorite skincare tip. A beauty oil can be used on every skin type and at any time of day. It will not actually moisturize your skin, but it will lock and seal all your moisturizing products underneath. Always use a beauty oil as a last step in your skincare routine. Choosing a beauty oil depends on your skin type and skin concern. My favorite beauty oils are actually inexpensive and work so well.
